What is TikTok?

TikTok is a short video creation and sharing social media application. It was launched in 2016 by the Chinese startup ByteDance and it also goes by the name Douyin in China. A big step for TikTok was the merge with the also video-sharing app Musical.ly in August 2018.

In this application, the users can create and share their own 15 seconds videos, or their 1-minute looping videos. This looping video feature is reminiscent of the formerly popular app Vine that was shut down in 2017.

TikTok videos are famous for their quirkiness and the personalized feed, that the user has, make this app highly addictive.
